What should you not do when visiting New York?

    1. Never ever ever stop in the middle of a crowded sidewalk. Move to one side, either the building side or the street side next to an obstruction.
    2. When boarding a subway, stand well away from the doors and let passengers off first. Never ever try to “sneak on”.
    3. When on the subway, seats are for passengers. Putting your bag on a seat may get you arrested, no joke. If you have two bags, one goes on your lap, one between your legs.
    4. Don’t leave your hotel without going to the bathroom. Seriously. New York restaurants usually have one over-utilized rest room for both sexes. What public rest rooms that do exist are horribly small. Big tourist attractions (e.g. the Empire State Building, WTC), museums, performing arts centres and convention centres are available in a pinch.
    5. Don’t visit Times Square. You probably will, but it will be a waste of time. The areas around Times Square (6th and 8th Avenue) are usually more entertaining.
    6. Don’t drive. Driving is the worst way to go around the city. Parking ranges from inconvenient to overpriced to non-existent. Buses are a close second because they have to operate in the same traffic. Instead, walk (it’s often the fastest way around) or take the subway. Cabs are plentiful and not terribly expensive for short trips.
    7. Don’t “wing it” from the airport. Have a plan to get to your accommodation. JFK has the best transportation links, Newark is a distant second, and LaGuardia has the worst. That works both ways – you will need time to get to the airport. If you have no plan, the available options may be expensive. On the other hand if you arrive by rail or bus, Grand Central, Penn Station and the Port Authority Terminal are all well connected.

Oh, and I disagree about asking New Yorkers for directions. New Yorkers hate being approached for money (it’s a constant battle) but if they realize you’re lost they will help you out. New Yorkers have been known for saying “I’m going that way, follow me”.
