Central Highlands lake offers a Southeast Asian camping high

Rough Guides has named the Lak Lake in Vietnam’s Central Highlands as top luxury camping destination in Southeast Asia.

The U.K.-based travel publication has included Lak Lake among four luxury camping destinations in the region.

Lak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, spanning an area of about 500 hectares. It is the second largest such lake in Vietnam, after Ba Be, a UNESCO recognized site in northern Vietnam.

Many ethnic minority communities live along the banks of the Lak Lake offering visitors an added cultural experience. Rough Guides mentions gong shows and elephant rides as activities to be enjoyed at the lake.

Around 150 kilometers from the renowned resort town of Da Lat, the Lak Lake area used to be a favorite spot of Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam (reigning 1926 -1945), who built a mansion overlooking the lake.

The UK publication recommends a longboat trip on the lake, during which they can explore Mong ethnic minority villages with their stilt houses.

Visitors can also rent a bike and explore the countryside, marked by coffee and rubber plantations here.

The other destinations recommended by Rough Guides for luxury camping in Southeast Asia are: Koh Kong in Cambodia, Luang Prabhang in Laos and Khao Yai in Thailand.
