The origin of Hou Dong cat village

Before 1970, Hou Dong was famous as one of the largest coal mining areas of Taiwan at that time. There was a time when this small village was inhabited by as many as 6,000 people. However, later, when the area’s coal resources were gradually exhausted, Hau Dong’s coal mining industry also went down, this village gradually fell into oblivion and dullness.

In 2008, after a group of volunteers searched for feral cats everywhere and brought them to Hau Dong to take care of them and posted them on social media for help, this small village suddenly attracted the attention of many people. many people, especially cat lovers. Since then, Hou Dong’s appearance gradually changed and became one of Taiwan’s favorite places.

Not only is it famous for being home to many friendly cats, but Hau Dong also makes the cat-loving team “fall in love” with cat-related items such as cat cafes, souvenirs, cat cakes…

When walking from Hau Dong station to the village, you will pass through a footpath designed with cat ears on one end and a cat tail on the other end, making visitors feel like they are walking through a small cat’s belly. . Even the public toilets in Hau Dong are decorated with cute and lively pictures of cats.
