Located approximately 9 km from the city center in Go Vap District, Phu Chau Floating Temple offers a serene and unique experience away from the bustling streets of District 1. To reach the temple from District 1, it is recommended to take a taxi due to the distance and travel time. Using a taxi app can provide transparency on pricing and make the journey more convenient. Keep in mind that you have to cross through the city, so it can take between 40 minutes up to 1 hour to get there.
As the temple is situated on an island, the only way to access it is by ferry. Upon arriving near the temple, you can walk to the nearby shore and rent a boat to reach the island. The cost of the ferry ticket is 10,000 VND per person.
History of the Phu Chau Temple
Legend has it that the temple was established in the 18th century to honor a drowned woman found by a fisherman. To improve his life and business, he built a small temple using bamboo and coconut leaves, marking the humble beginnings of Phu Chau Temple, or also known as Mieu Noi Temple.
Under the reign of King Gia Long in the early 19th century, the temple was further developed, blending Chinese-inspired architectural features. It became a significant pilgrimage destination, attracting many worshippers from the city and surrounding areas.
The temple underwent various upgrades and expansions over time, with locals respecting not only the drowned woman but also the Five Elements and the Dragon Mom. After a period of decline, the temple experienced a restoration in 1989 thanks to the contributions of a generous donor. Since then, Phu Chau Temple has regained its popularity and serves as a cherished religious place for locals and nearby residents.

After the location, the dragons are the second element that make this temple unique, because you will find about 100 dragons. These dragons can be found in various styles, shapes, and positions, both on the exterior and interior of the temple.
Each dragon is meticulously carved, gracefully winding around pillars and walls, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. As you explore the temple complex, which spans approximately 2,500 square meters, you’ll encounter an abundance of these dragon imagery.
