Dae Oh Bookstore Cafe, an old coffee shop that looks like it came out of Reply 1988 in Seoul

Since when did Dae Oh bookstore exist?
Dae Oh Bookstore was established in 1951, so far it has passed 70 years of “life” and has become one of the oldest bookstores in Seoul. Currently, this bookstore has turned into a coffee shop, but it is still hidden in a peaceful corner of an old town and quite close to the largest palace from the Joseon Dynasty – Gyeongbokgung.

The name Dae Oh is derived from the first syllable of the couple’s name Kwon Oh Nam and Choi Dae Sik. The couple is famous for a collection of old books and antique props that decorate the bookstore. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Kwon Oh Nam still tries to maintain this bookstore as one of the remaining beautiful memories of Mr. Choi Dae Sik.

In 2013, she and her children decided to remodel and turn Dae Oh bookstore into a small cafe. However, the structure of the bookstore remains the same and only repaints the walls or decorates with a few small details.
Dae Oh Bookstore – a stop for nostalgic people
When arriving in Dae Oh, most visitors feel overwhelmed when they open the blue door and step into a world filled with ancient books. The books at Dae Oh bookstore are packed and arranged close together on the shelves, creating an extremely cozy feeling. Besides, the bookstore is also decorated with a series of antique props that both bring back a bit of nostalgia and add to the sweet vibes.

Visitors to Dae Oh bookstore can buy drinks or small souvenirs at the counter behind the door. However, because the space of the bookstore is quite small, so the store often limits the number of people in and out. After paying, visitors continue to “travel” into a small courtyard filled with old books. There are also several other rooms with many period items and reflect the long history of Dae Oh bookstore.
