Dragon Bridge – Da Nang

Crossing the Han River in Da Nang, the Dragon Bridge is the longest bridge in Vietnam. Spanning 666 meters (2185 feet) and towering at 66 feet high, its iconic dragon design has made it one of Da Nang’s most famous attractions.

Officially opened in 2013, the bridge was constructed to coincide with the 38th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation. As a major port city, Da Nang plays a vital role in Vietnam’s day-to-day operations and has grown to become one of the country’s largest and most popular cities.

The Dragon Bridge is not only a celebration of Vietnamese culture but also recognizes Da Nang’s immense growth and rise to worldwide fame. Nearby, although not as famous, visitors can also stop by the Han River Bridge which also has a light show at night.

Ly Dynasty Dragon breathes fire!

The bridge’s iconic design depicts a significant power symbol – the Ly Dynasty dragon. This historic avatar has long been associated with royal power and similar dragons can be found carved in temples and historic buildings up and down the country. The Dragon Bridge features six lanes and spans across the flowing Han River.

The prominence of the number six in the bridge’s construction is no accident either, as the number is culturally associated with good luck and positive fortune. While the structure is an impressive sight during the day, the evening is where the Dragon Bridge really comes to life. Thousands of colorful LED lights illuminate the bridge and, on weekends, the dragon breathes fire out of its mouth.

The flame-throwing dragon’s head is a sight that attracts millions of visitors every year. From 9 PM onwards, large, awe-inspired crowds flock to the bridge’s summit, armed with their cameras and smartphones. On landmark occasions, the bridge also shoots water from its mouth.

If you’re planning on watching the Dragon Bridge’s famous fire show, then aim to get there in advance, as it gets very busy from 10:30 PM onwards. If you’re hoping to avoid the crowds entirely, then there are plenty of waterside bars and restaurants nearby. You can even see the show from the river, courtesy of a boat tour.

The Dragon Bridge is the perfect hybrid between old-time Vietnamese tradition and modern-day technological mastery. It’s impossible to miss if you’re in Da Nang, and a sight of the fire-breathing bridge will certainly be a highlight of your visit!
