Largest Khmer Pagoda in the West

Siamese Pagoda (Bac Lieu) is one of the most beautiful and largest Khmer temples in the West.

Located about 7 km from the center of Bac Lieu City and about 2 km from the coast, Siamese Pagoda bears a khmer architectural imprint.

The pagoda was started construction in 1887 with an area of more than 4,500 m2. This is a whole architecture consisting of many items such as wall, gate, main hall, sala, bell tower, resting place of monks, lecture halls, pillars, tomb towers. They’re all headed east. This is the Khmer notion that the path to achieving Buddha’s fruit is from west to east.

According to the original inhabitants, the temple was called Komphirsakor Prét Chru which means deep river, later changed to Siamese, meaning “water border”, meaning a pagoda on a land right next to the coastal mudfield.

The temple grounds have dozens of large and small Buddha statues, many of which are of various sizes, depicting the periods of Buddha’s incarnation.

The rectangular pagoda main building, built right in the middle of the campus, follows three levels of 4 m high and 18 steps to go up. The entrance to the main palace has a large unicorn double figure, next to the elaborately crafted patterns.

The space inside the main palace is decorated with frescoes and vanity that tells the story of Buddha’s life from birth, to the process of cultivating at fruit.

In the middle of the main palace is a semicircular pedestal nearly 2 m high and divided into several steps worshiping the Statue of Buddha.

Many details in the main palace are decorated with elaborate, elaborate and colorful frescoes bearing the Buddhist imprint.
