Vietnam is known for its vast and varying environments, so visitors are often surprised to hear about Mui Ne’s beautiful Arabian-like sand dunes that make for a great day trip from the coastal city. The Red Sand Dunes, known as “doi hong,” are not too far from town and offer stunning scenery and some opportunities for outdoor play.

Even though these dunes are smaller than its sister site, the White Sand Dunes, they’ve proven to be just as worth a stop from any tourist. Many companies organize day trips out to the dunes, however, they aren’t too difficult to get to and can be easily accessed for some off-the-beaten-path adventure on your own.

A trip to the Red Sand Dunes can be made independently or on an organized tour as a stop on the way to the White Sand Dunes. Depending on how much time you want to spend there will dictate how you visit.

The amber sands are constantly shifting, making the scenery a little different with each visit. Several tours like to make stops at the Red Sand Dunes, usually towards the end of their itinerary, so that the area can seem rather crowded at times. However, there is plenty of space for everyone to roam around and enjoy the peaceful and photogenic environment.

The dunes are also more than just a place to see some pretty sand. There are a handful of activities that you can look forward to during your visit if you choose.

Exploring

Sometimes the best way to enjoy an environment is to walk and take in all the sights without any other distractions. Many tourists and locals enjoy just casually walking and admiring the dunes, especially during the early mornings and late afternoons. If you can plan ahead, packing a picnic is a fun way to slow down and smell the roses.

Photography

There are so many beautiful places in Vietnam to capture with a camera, but these dunes might be some of the most unique you’ll find on a trip. The red glow of the endless sand surrounding you will be memorable and a great place to sneak in some artistic photography and selfies.

Sledding

While strolling the area and taking photographs are popular activities at this site, the most attractive pastime at the dunes is sledding. As you get near the Red Dunes, be aware of children and locals pushing tourists to rent small plastic sleds. If that’s what you want to do, keep in mind it’s best to agree on the price before paying for your rental sled, as some former tourists had issues with this.

Best Time to Visit

The Red Sand Dunes are open all year long, so there isn’t a particular season that’s better over another. You will want to visit when the sand is dry instead of on a rainy day because there’s more to see and experience.

However, when it comes to the best time of day to visit, sunrise and sunset are optimal. Some visitors opt for an early morning jeep tour and come back on their own with a rental motorbike for sunset. The light rays from a rising or setting sun reflect beautifully on the sand, providing some of the best photograph opportunities in the area.

Numerous companies arrange early morning and dusk tours for a very affordable price, which can be booked from most hotels.
