Saigon River – HCMC

The flowing Saigon River has seen much change during its life. The city surrounding its banks has gone through massive change and huge development over the centuries and continues to grow and reinvent itself around it. Originating near Phum Daung, the Saigon River meanders through Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, before emptying near Soai Rap, after a 225 km journey.

The Saigon River (Song Sai Gon) plays a key role in the life of the city. As its main water supply, it seamlessly transports both people and cargo up and down its currents and provides a livelihood for a large percentage of the city’s merchants.

There are several tours running on the Saigon River due to its proximity to several landmarks like the Cu Chi Tunnels, the Binh Quoi Tourist Village, and the bustling Saigon Port. There’s seldom a dull day on the Saigon River, with ships, boats, and river cruises constantly maneuvering on it. The sunset river cruises are perfect for couples seeking a romantic excursion.

The Thu Thiem Tunnel, a marvel of modern engineering, passes underneath the Saigon River. This 33m wide tunnel spans the entire width of the river and connects HCMC with the Thu Theim Urban Area. Built to alleviate the city’s infamous traffic, the Thu Thiem Tunnel is a safe and convenient way to criss-cross the Saigon River in style.

It’s best to explore the Saigon River during summer when the weather is fair. Remember to bring sunscreen and appropriate clothing to shield yourself from the heat of the sun. The strong winds coming from the river can mislead you into thinking the heat isn’t that strong – so be prepared to protect your skin from the blistering rays.

The Saigon River’s important role in the city can’t be understated. As Vietnam continues to evolve, the flowing river in its most famous city remains an ever-present feature.
