Vietnam Military History Museum – Hanoi

Previously known as the Army Museum, the Vietnam Military History Museum, in Hanoi, boasts a comprehensive array of military hardware. The artifacts come in all shapes and sizes, including decommissioned fighter jet, tanks, and the remnants of a twisted American B-52 bomber.

While there is a big focus on the Vietnam War, the museum also sheds light on the country’s multiple revolutions and armed struggles that spanned centuries.

The Vietnam Military History Museum houses a plethora of historical pieces and personal artifacts, such as candid photographs and written personal accounts of Vietnamese soldiers.  In addition to the large 20th-century weaponry, there are dioramas of battle scenes, maps, uniforms, and some ancient war relics dating back to feudal times.

Within the museum complex, there are two buildings, each dedicated to certain historical events. Exhibits in the main building focus on the First Indochina War and the Battle of Dien Bien Phu as well as describing what life was like during the Japanese occupation in WWII.

Within the second building, visitors can learn more about the personal struggles individuals faced during the Vietnam War.  Inside, there are military vehicles, artistic dioramas depicting jungle warfare, and patriotic bronze statues located here.

For those interested in seeing a Soviet MiG-21 jet fighter and the first tank to roll through the gates of Saigon’s Independence Palace in 1975, head out to the courtyard. While outside, climb to the top of the iconic 200-year old Hanoi Flag Tower which is situated within the grounds of the museum and offers incredible panoramic city views.
