By the end of August, hot temperatures persist from 11:30 am to 6 pm.

Hanoi receives the highest amount of rain in August compared to the rest of the year. Trung Nguyen, or Wandering Souls Day, takes place on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month and is the second-largest festival in Hanoi after Tet. On this day, the Vietnamese believe that the gates of hell open and that condemned souls can be delivered from hell through the prayers of the living. During the festival, large tables are set up with food offerings to feed the wandering souls, and money and clothes are burned as the Vietnamese believe that these items can be used in the spirit world.

For more festival fun, visit Do Son approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Hanoi to experience the Do Son Buffalo Festival, which is held on the ninth day of the eighth lunar month. This festival expresses the bravery and risk-taking spirit of the Hai Phong people.

Tips for Visiting Hanoi in August

Due to the heavy humidity, regular rainfall and sweltering heat, it’s best to avoid visiting Hanoi during this time and instead wait until September when the weather is drier and more bearable.

However, compared to June and July, temperatures in August are more tolerable as gentle winds, and cloudy skies from the frequent rainstorms can help bring the temperature down a bit.

If you do decide to visit Hanoi during this time of year, be prepared for flooding. Parts of the city have been known to flood after a particularly heavy downpour, and traveling to the countryside can become dangerous as heavy rains cause poor road conditions.

Be sure to wear light, sweat-absorbent clothes when visiting in August, and make sure you wear adequate sun protection when outdoors, including sunscreen, sun hats, and sunglasses. Have rain gear on hand at all times as rainfall is frequent and unexpected.
