Temperatures begin increasing slightly in February as Hanoi enters its spring season, with the temperature ranging from 60°F (15.5°C) – 67°F (19.4°C) on average. The weather continues to be cool and comfortable during this time, although it feels colder than it looks due to the high 82% humidity.

Hanoi only receives 1.6 hours of direct sunlight in February, which represents 14% of the 11.5 hours of daylight. The amount of rainfall received begins to increase slightly compared to January, with an average of 26.2 mm of rain over 11.3 days of rainfall.

February in Hanoi is one of the most festive seasons of the year, as a large number of festivals take place annually throughout and nearby Vietnam’s capital city.

The Vietnamese New Year, known as Tet Nguyen Dan (Tet), begins on the first day of the first month according to the Lunar Calendar, typically occurring around late January to early/mid-February in the Western calendar. The festival generally lasts for one week but can last longer, depending on when the date falls.

At midnight on the first day, Tet will begin with a fireworks display at around 30 different locations in Hanoi. Some of the best viewpoints include the Hoan Kiem Lake, the Lac Long Quan flower garden, and My Dinh National Stadium. The festival continues with traditional dances, ceremonies, food, games, rides, and more.

On the fifth day of the Lunar calendar, Hanoians celebrate the Dong Da Festival, which honors the triumphs of Emperor Quang Trung over the Chinese Qing invaders in 1789. During this celebration, a procession commemorating the historic event commences at Khuong Thuong and ends at Dong Da Hill, where participants gather to participate in games and traditional art activities following the solemn rites.

The Coa Loa Festival takes place on the sixth day of the Lunar New Year in Hanoi and acknowledges King An Duong Vuong for building the Au Lac Kingdom and the Coa Loa Citadel in 1st Century BC. The festival is celebrated for 10 days with a procession, incense burning, games, fireworks, dancing, and music.

On the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, thousands of pilgrims from all over Vietnam visit Hanoi’s renowned Perfume Pagoda Festival, located approximately 70 km from Hanoi. The festival typically begins between mid-February to March, when people visit to pay their respects to Buddha and pray for a prosperous year.

During daylight hours in February, the weather is warm enough to be comfortable in a long-sleeved shirt. As temperatures drop slightly in the evening, it is best to take a jacket or sweater with you in order to remain warm when out-and-about in the city. Be prepared to pack warmer clothes as many buildings in Hanoi lack central heating.

As February weather continues to be quite dry similar to January, make sure that you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated when outdoors. It’s also recommended that you continue to wear sunscreen during this time as the sun’s UV rays came become quite intense during the daylight hours.

February is a wonderful time to visit Hanoi to participate in the many festivals and sample the traditional dishes that the city offers. If traveling to Hanoi during the Tet festival, be sure to make arrangements in advance, as transportation becomes crowded and traffic becomes heavy due to the number of Vietnamese people traveling home for the holiday. The worst days to travel to Hanoi in February are two days before and three days after Tet, as many tourist sites, restaurants and shops will be closed for the holiday.
