In recent years, dorm rooms have officially become a familiar phrase, especially with young people. It not only helps those who are planning to travel have more choices for accommodation, but also saves a lot of money compared to motels or normal 4.5-star hotels.

1. What is a dorm room?

In simple terms, a dorm room is a type of dormitory room with bunk beds, similar to the type of bedroom in dormitories. The room will be for more than 1 person to sleep in a double or single bed. Normally, each bed in the dorm room will have a curtain and a small drawer to store important things, but not everywhere will make curtains for guests.

Dorm rooms have a layout quite similar to familiar dormitories.

Dorm rooms are often found in hostels, homestays, etc., which provide room services at a cheaper price than a hotel. But besides that, the services and materials are also limited compared to the hotel..

For the most part, dorm guests will be backpackers, or young people who are not too picky about sleeping in comfortable hotels, in order to minimize the cost of the journey. .

2. Advantages/disadvantages of dorm rooms

Advantages

– Dorm rooms are cheap because many people rent and sleep in the same room (in Vietnam, the average price is about 80,000 to 20 thousand VND/person/night);

– In addition, thanks to living together, it is an ideal environment to exchange and make new friends.

The dorm room is “on the throne” because it has many advantages that are loved by young people.

A little tip: To be really comfortable and minimize inconvenience, the best way is to go out and rent a dorm room in a group, so it will be both fun and not afraid of strangers sharing the room.

3. Types of dorm rooms

Dorm rooms are usually divided into 3 types:

Mixed dorm: men and women share a room

Male dorm: only men sharing a room

Female dorm: only female sharing a room

However, not everywhere is divided into 3 types of rooms as above. Most places are only divided into mixed dorm and female dorm. So, before you intend to rent a dorm and have a need to separate rooms, you should find out carefully to avoid unexpected problems.

4. Tips for choosing a cheap dorm room

First of all, when planning each trip, you should rely on Google by searching search terms like “cheap dorm room”, “reputable dorm room”, “cheap dorm”, “cheap hostel” and comes with the place you need to go. Only 1 second, hundreds of results will appear for you to refer to and choose from.

Or another way, that is, you will access applications such as Booking, Agoda, Hostelword, … to view and select rooms on your smartphone. Simple, convenient and also easy to find a suitable dorm room, based on the reviews of people who have experienced before.

Search Google or use booking apps to find the right dorm room.

However, the “elders” in the backpacking world recommend contacting to book a bed (not a reservation) directly, not through intermediary web sites. How? When choosing a reasonable place (in terms of price, service, location, …) then you should search google to find their website address, contact information and make a direct agreement between the two parties. Because, the price negotiated directly is usually lower than the price on intermediary websites.

You should also look for web reviews online (tripadvisor, lonelyplanet, …). On it, there are real feedbacks and comments including compliments and criticisms, photos and feelings of people who have been there for your reference and choose the most suitable place for yourself.

Although there are certain disadvantages, staying in a dorm room is also a really enjoyable experience for anyone. If you are planning a trip, why not try once to choose a dorm room as a stopover to rest?
