Not the country of lychee, but in the land of An Giang, there are two ancient lychee trees with an age of more than 300 years. This pair of lychees is a hundred years older than the lychee tree in Hai Duong, once recognized as “Vietnam’s oldest lychee tree”.

The pair of lychees mentioned are located on the campus of Svai Ta Hon pagoda (Ninh Loi hamlet, An Tuc commune, Tri Ton district, An Giang). Despite the rain of bombs and bullets during the war, the two lychee trees still stood proudly, reaching out to shade the Khmer people in the mountainous country for many generations.

Most Venerable Chau Hen – Abbot of Svai Ta Hon Pagoda said that these two litchi trees have lived for more than 300 years. Previously, the pagoda had a total of three lychee trees, but during the war, one of them was damaged and died. two current trees.

“These two trees are the same age, but the size is not the same, one tree is tall and big, the other is a little shorter. However, the litchi tree is smaller in size but gives a lot of fruit,” said the head monk of Svay pagoda. Ta Hon said.

According to PV’s observations, although rooted in arid mountain soil, the two litchi trees grow very well, even larger and more superficial than the “nest” lychee tree in Hai Duong.

The pair of lychee has a height of over 30m, the canopy is more than 50m wide. The large and upright trunk is not divided into many trunks like the old litchi trees in the North.

In particular, the tree trunk is very large, it takes 3-4 people to hug it. On the body there are many lumpy, lumpy nodules as evidence for the remnants of time left. From a distance, the large and majestic cloth bag looks like two dharma protectors standing guard in front of the temple yard.

“In the season, these two litchi trees shed a lot of leaves. Around the third lunar month is the time when the trees bear fruit. The lychee fruit is small but sweet and very fragrant. At that time, the children in the area gathered to pick the litchi and eat it very well. crowded,” the abbot said.

In 2013, the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment in collaboration with the An Giang Forest Protection Department held a ceremony to announce and award certificates to recognize these two elder litchi trees as “Vietnamese heritage trees”, which should be preserved . and preserve.
