Where to go for snow in India this summer

In these hot summer months, snow may feel like a distant dream, especially in India. But what if we told you that this summer, you can behold sights of picturesque white wonderlands within the country. Here’s a list of places where you can take much needed respite from the scorching summers and indulge in a beautiful yet tranquil snow experience without paying a fortune.

🌸 Zoji La, Dras Valley (Ladakh)

The site of the Indo-Pakistan War, this pass is located in the Kargil district of Ladakh. Often touted as the zero point due to its freezing temperatures and lack of vegetation, this pass is a must visit for those seeking winter in the months of April to July. It is set amidst snow-clad mountains, and to its west, it connects to the Kashmir Valley, while on the northeast lie the valleys of Dras and Suru. Tourists can also experience snow biking offered by local travel operators.

🌸 Thajiwas Glacier, Sonmarg (Jammu & Kashmir)

Thajiwas glacier is no less than a scene out of a Yash Raj Chopra movie—the bright blue sky is a beautiful contrast to the white, snow-capped mountains. As summer approaches, little specks of vibrant green add on to the painting, making it a magical place. Apart from the freezing winter months, snow is also present during the months of April, May and early June, after which it begins to melt away and gives way to lush green meadows. An adventurous pony ride from Sonmarg will take you to this picturesque spot, which is also famous for sledding down the snowy hills.

A horse ride from Sonmarg to Thajiwas glacier is usually preferred but tourists can choose to walk (30 minutes). Nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport (85 km)

🌸 Rohtang La (Himachal Pradesh)

About 50 km from Manali, this famous pass connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh. Unpredictable and unruly climatic conditions mean that this pass is open to tourists only from April to October. According to locals and guides, this year, a thick blanket of snow will cover the pass, making it a great spot to escape the summer heat from April to June. Rohtang not only holds strategic value for India but also offers breathtaking views of glaciers, towering peaks, the idyllic Lahaul Valley, and the serpentine Chandra River. Moreover, the majestic twin peaks of Geypan are a sight to behold from the pass. Sports such as paragliding, snow scooter driving, and mountain biking are common.

🌸 Kunzum La, Spiti Valley (Himachal Pradesh)

Spiti Valley or “the middle land” is nestled between Tibet and India in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh. This summer, snow has been predicted in Kunzum pass, which is situated in Spiti and should last from May to June. Tourists can relish the pleasant weather and indulge in a panoramic view of the Bara Shingri glacier—one of the largest glaciers in India—and the snow-covered mountains of the Chandrabhaga range.

🌸Bhaderwah, Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir)

Another snow-covered valley tucked in the Doda district of Jammu is Bhaderwah. Located in the foothills of the middle Himalayas, it is often hailed as “Chota Kashmir” for its striking beauty. The best time to visit is spring and summer for the snow begins to melt, unveiling vast stretches of green meadows and colourful flowers. This year, however, Bhaderwah continues to be covered by thick blankets of snow. Snow is predicted to last from April till mid June.
