The Vinh Hung Ancient Tower was discovered in 1911, but the archaic building is much older than that. This structure is from the Angkor period, when the Khmer people lived, dating back to the 9th century.

According to Sanskrit writings found on the pagoda next door, it’s estimated that the Vinh Hung Tower was built sometime between 814-892 BC. The tower is especially noteworthy in the Mekong Delta, being the only one of its kind and age in the area. It’s located in Vinh Loi, a rural district in the Bac Lieu Province.

Also known as “Luc Hien” or “Bhah Dhat tower,” this structure has a lot of religious significance. Inside the tower is a shrine with several bronze and stone statues of Buddha parts and many other worshipping relics. Pilgrims from near and far flock to the area to pray at the tower’s pagoda for good things to come their way. Additionally, monks go there to chant daily at 4:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Each year, residents celebrate Vinh Hung Tower’s anniversary on the 15th day of the first lunar month, adding to its cultural importance. The outside of the tower is made of solid bricks that are impressively packed together tightly and reach a height of 8.9 meters/29 feet. Thanks to careful preservation, the quality of the structure seems to be in stable shape for many future visitors.
